BRITAIN could be set for freezing temperatures for the rest of the month as snow and ice look set to bring more travel chaos today.

Temperatures plummeted once again overnight with the north of England most likely to face disruption on Tuesday morning, the Met Office said.

Yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place throughout the UK, including all of Wales and the Midlands and the majority of the north of England and Scotland.

Several cars have crashed on the M5 in Gloucestershire and Leicestershire Police said heavy snow is causing problems around East Midlands Airport this morning.

The wintry conditions are expected to continue into the weekend and there are warnings that Britain could face unusually cold weather for the rest of the month.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said: "There are indications of quite a prolonged cold period. As we go through the next 24 to 48 hours, it's going to stay cold, and we are going to see some snow and pretty much anywhere in the country could see something.

"Across a big chunk of Scotland and Northern Ireland, where we have had snow overnight, that's likely to then lead to some ice in time for the morning rush hour.

"Across northern parts of England and Wales we are likely to have some snow falling during morning rush hour, so that's likely to cause some difficult driving conditions and there could also be some icy patches too."

Another 10 British Airways flights have already been cancelled to and from London's Heathrow airport this morning after 70 were axed yesterday.

Temperatures will dip further on Tuesday night - and could sink as low as -11C in parts of Scotland and northern England.
