DONALD Trump warned Britain and the EU to let in American chlorinated chicken and slash extortionate tariffs on US cars and food or face crippling export taxes themselves.
The President said his Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross will speak to his European counterparts about “eliminating the large tariffs and barriers they use against the USA”.,
trade chief Liam Fox said Mr Trump’s decision to unilaterally hike tariffs could even break international law.
He said he had spoken to US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross yesterday afternoon - as well as his EU counterparts - to try to de-escalate the trade war and will travel to Washington later this week.
Mr Trump is also angry at the EU ban on American meat products such as chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected beef.
Brussels bans these products for sale in Europe because they breach EU rules on animal welfare.
Mr Trump escalated the trade war with the EU after he accused the EU at the weekend of abusing the US economically - branding the bloc “wonderful countries who treat the US very badly on trade”.
Returning to Twitter yesterday, Mr Trump wrote: “Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will be speaking with representatives of the European Union about eliminating the large Tariffs and Barriers they use against the U.S.A. Not fair to our farmers and manufacturers.”
