A ‘NOTORIOUS’ kiddie train owner accused of molesting more than a dozen children has been bashed to death in jail.
North Texas man Clinton Don Simpson, 76, was found with his head caved-in after suffering blunt force head injuries, according to a medical examiner report.
He had been charged with molesting children attending parties at a miniature train complex – “Mr. Don’s Whistle Stop” – he built in his yard in Keller, reports CBS Local.
After being arrested in 2007, Simpson faced more than a dozen charges of aggravated sexual assault, indecency with a child or sexual abuse.
Star-Telegram reports that Simpson had spent years in state hospitals because he had been found incompetent to stand trial, but was returned to the Tarrant County Jail, Texas, in July.
Sam Jordan, a spokeswoman for the Tarrant County district attorney’s office, said: “He was recently found competent and returned [to prison].”
David Faustino Flores, a 42-year-old Fort Worth man jailed on a charge of injuring an elderly man, has been accused of killing “one of Tarrant County’s most notorious accused child molesters”, reports the Star-Telegram.
Flores has been arraigned on a charge of murder in connection with Wednesday’s death of Simpson, said Mike Simonds, senior chief of the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office.
Bond has been set at £38,400 ($50,000).
The Texas Rangers said that the accused child molester was attacked at 2.20am on Wednesday inside the Fort Worth-based prison.
He was pronounced dead at 3.09am the same day.
Faces Bobo, a friend of Simpson’s family, told the Star-Telegram that, “he was a wonderful family man who was very kind. He so loved God and his family”.
Bobo said Simpson had been a “great preacher” and was formerly an instructor at Brown Trail Church of Christ in Bedford.
His miniature train operation was closed in 2007 – the same year he surrendered to officials after parents called 911 and reported alleged “inappropriate touching” of pre-school-age girls.
Prosecutors filed ten aggravated sexual assault of a child charges, three indecency/fondling charges, and one continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 charge against Simpson, according to court records.
